An oil recommended for a cold climate could seize the engine if use by a vehicle owner in a warm climate.
The oil also removes particulate matter from the engine. If left in the engine too long it will eventually become thick with grime and burnt particles called sludge.
Oil change intervals are set so that you replace the oil when it is beginning to fail, not after it has failed.
