What Causes A Car To Overheat?

There are many reasons a car can overheat.  Here is a list we hope you find helpful.

  • Vehicle is low on coolant, or out of coolant.
  • Leaking, blocked, or ruptured coolant hose.
  • Worn or loose belts.
  • Broken water pump impellor.
  • The radiator is cracked or leaking.
  • The radiator fan clutch or electric motor is faulty.
  • The radiator is clogged internally or externally.
  • Newer cars have louvers in front grille for cooling that may cause issues.
  • A low engine oil level.
  • A plugged exhaust pipe or catalytic converter.
  • The thermostat is stuck.
  • The head gasket or other engine issues are causing the problem.
  • The camshaft timing is incorrect.
  • The ignition timing is incorrect.
  • The fuel system is too lean.

A service center will test these components and systems to determine the issue and the cost to repair. Some tests are easy and some not. Some shops will have a fee for the time-consuming testing, so please make sure you understand what is being done.
